I have always enjoyed history, as there is so much that we can learn from it. Of all the happenings that are heartrending, the Holocaust sticks out in my heart and soul the most. I have read and watched many stories about it, and found that the most poignant show I’ve seen in a long time was Escape from Sobibor.
I was scrolling through the channels on my www.directstartv.com, looking for something different to watch. I came across this movie, and learned that it was based on a true story, so I decided to watch. The movie is about the German death camp Sobibor in Poland. It chronicled the lives of the Jewish people that were forced into the camp, as well as a focus on Soviet dissidents. The main character was a young boy named Thomas Blatt, who was affectionately called Toivi. It was a very moving story, portraying how these people, starving and terrified, were able to rise up against the German regime and escape Sobibor successfully. through immense planning, and the help of the Soviets that arrived at the camp, they plotted to murder the Germans in order to escape. There were many that died in the uprising, but many that escaped into the woods as well. What made this movie even more moving was that Thomas “Toivi? Blatt actually helped direct this movie, to help maintain its historical accuracy. He was 15 years old when he escaped from Sobibor, and was one of the few that lived to tell this horrifying story.
